چکیده

The inability to capture the physics of solid-particle suspension in turbulent fluid flow is holding back application of multiphase computational fluid dynamics techniques to the many problems involving particle suspension in nature and society. We present a theory for particle suspension capacity near no-slip frictional boundaries of turbulent flows. The suspension capacity parameter Γ includes universal turbulent flow scales and material properties of the fluid and particles only. Comparison to measurements shows that Γ =1 gives the upper limit of observed suspended particle concentrations in a 10 broad range of flume experiments and field settings. The condition of Γ >1 coincides with complete suppression of coherent turbulent structures near the boundary in Direct Numerical Simulations of sediment-laden turbulent flow. The theory outperforms previous empiric relations when compared to data. It can be applied as a concentration boundary condition in modelling studies of dispersion of particulates in environmental and man-made flows. 15

A model for fluvial bedrock incision by impacting suspended and bed load sediment

[1] A mechanistic model is derived for the rate of fluvial erosion into bedrock by abrasion from uniform size particles that impact the bed during transport in both bed and suspended load. The erosion rate is equated to the product of the impact rate, the mass loss per particle impact, and a bed coverage term. Unlike previous models that consider only bed load, the impact rate is not assumed to...

Aeolian sand transport with collisional suspension

Aeolian transport is an important mechanism for the transport of sand on Earth and on Mars. Dust and sand storms are common occurrences on Mars and windblown sand is responsible for many of the observed surface features, such as dune fields. A better understanding of Aeolian transport could also lead to improvements in pneumatic conveying of materials to be mined for life support on the surface...

Numerical simulation of effect of non-spherical particle shape and bed size on hydrodynamics of packed beds

Fluid flow has a fundamental role in the performance of packed bed reactors. Some related issues, such as pressure drop, are strongly affected by porosity, so non-spherical particles are used in industry for enhancement or creation of the desired porosity. In this study, the effects of particle shape, size, and porosity of the bed on the hydrodynamics of packed beds are investigated with three ...

Overview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows

An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...
